    By following Marvin Gaye´s artistic evolution from early Motown hits such as "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" and "Can I Get a Witness" to the bluesy, abstract expressionism of concept albums such as What´s Going On and Here, My Dear, the four-disc box set The Master: 1964-1984 gives die-hard fans and novices alike insight into Gaye´s development as a songwriter. You don´t have to read David Ritz´s liner notes to understand the man and the artist you simply have to listen. Gaye poured his heart into the songs collected here whether he was wooing prospective sweethearts, expressing his political and social views, or confessing the details of his drug addiction and crumbling relationships. Also featured on this compilation are his precious collaborations with Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross, Mary Wells, and Gladys Knight, as well as 18 previously unreleased singles. From "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" on disc two to "Sexual Healing" and "The Lord´s Prayer" on disc four, Gaye´s lyrical intensity is matched only by his increasingly complex arrangements.
