- CD Beyond The Blue Horizon
Beyond the Blue Horizon was George Benson´s CTI debut in 1971. Well before the CTI sound was established by the orchestral arrangements of Don Sebesky or Bob James, Creed Taylor was interested in making hard-grooving records, of which Beyond the Blue Horizon is one. The lineup is impressive: Jack DeJohnette on drums, Ron Carter on bass, the obscure but truly gifted Clarence Palmer on B-3, and, of course, Benson on guitar. Completely instrumental, this is a swinging hard jazz date. It kicks off with Miles Davis´ modal classic "So What," with Palmer´s solo working right through the double-timed rhythm section break, and Benson´s two solos are simply out of this world: quick, in the pocket, and full of harmonic invention at light speed. The cut is followed by a revolutionary reading of Luiz Bonfá´s "The Gentle Rain," which is defined by DeJohnette´s inventive rhythmic approach, walking the line between bossa and samba.
