  • Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Brazilian composer, arranger, singer, and pianist and one of the creators of bossa nova left an extraordinary legacy when he died in 1994 in New York at age 67. Many of his songs including "The Girl from Ipanema","Chega de Saudade", "Samba de Uma Nota So", "Corcovado", and "Insensatez", were not only hits in their day, but have become part of the American pop-music canon. Selected by the musician Oscar Castro-Neves Man From Ipanema is a three-CD set, tracing the development of Jobim´s music, and by extension, the growth of ´bossa nova´, the blend of Brazilian samba and American cool jazz that Jobim invented. Disc one collects vocal interpretations of Jobim´s songs, including recordings by Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto and Elis Regina. Disc two features instrumental interpretations of the same songs, taken largely from orchestral versions. Disc three placing three or four different versions of each of five of Jobim´s best-known songs. This box-set nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for ´Best Recording Package - Boxed´, is one of the most beautifully packaged box sets ever, a spiral-bound book of heavy pastel-colored paper cutouts mimicking the landscape of Antonio Carlos Jobim´s native Brazil.
